The son of Czech emigrants, Frank C. Manak studied law at the Western Reserve University Law School in the 1890s and began practicing law with Vesey, Davis & Manak.
Charles Manak graduated from the Case Western Reserve School of Law in 1990.

Charles R. Manak ("CRM") was general counsel to the Central Europe Telecom Investments, LP ("CETI"), a private equity fund designed to provide seed capital to telecom companies in Central & Eastern Europe in the 1990s.
As General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Courtland Partners, Ltd. ("Courtland"), CRM guided the owners and company through a successful merger in April 2018.
As General Counsel to CETI, CRM organized the acquisition, development and sale of eighteen telecom operating companies across Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania.
As a Senior Associate at Linklaters in Prague, the Czech Republic, CRM was lead counsel to Honeywell and the Impression Group in their acquisitions of manufacturing facilities across Central & Eastern Europe.
CRM was also international counsel to the IDT Corporation of Newark, New Jersey in its sale of Moscow-based Corbina Telecom.
CRM was the Data Privacy Officer and Counsel to Dendrite International, Inc. ("Dendrite") of Bedminister, New Jersey, prior to the acquisition of Dendrite by Cegedim SA of France.
CRM drafted MSAs and negotiated work orders on behalf of Dendrite with global pharmaceutical companies.
CRM regularly reviews independent appraisals of real estate assets held by pension funds on behalf of a discretionary real estate manager.
CRM negotiates AIA agreements and change orders with contractors engaged to carry out tenant improvements.
CRM reviews fiduciary opinions for a registered investment adviser where it acts as a fiduciary or qualified professional asset manager under ERISA.
Charles has over 22 years of experience working with private equity funds and companies investing in infrastructure projects and real estate in the United States and European emerging markets. While Charles was a Senior Associate at Linklaters, he created and led Linklaters Central European private equity practice group. Among other things, Charles has reviewed and structured real estate investment vehicles and international joint ventures in the United States, Russia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Romania. More recently, Charles coordinated the purchase of six properties across the United States through a joint venture involving a large German pension fund. Finally, Charles reviews subscription documents to open and closed end real estate funds for a large French insurance company.
Charles served as the Chief Compliance Officer of Courtland, formerly a registered investment adviser with the US Securities & Exchange Commission, until April 2018. Charles has coordinated exams of Courtland by the US Department of Labor (the "DOL") for ERISA compliance and the SEC. After the SEC concluded an exam of Courtland in May of 2017, Courtland received a no comment letter. After concluding an exam of Courtland, the DOL issued Courtland a no further action letter in 2014. Charles also coordinated the registration process of Courtland's UK subsidiary with the UK Financial Conduct Authority which was finalized in 2016.
From 2005 through 2008, Charles Manak served as a Board Member of CDS International (which merged together with the Association of International Practical Training in 2011), an organization providing international internships to graduate students in the United States and elsewhere. Charles participated in German study abroad programs through IES in 1985 and the first year of the Friendship Connection program in 1981, which Charles' high school German teacher founded in Hudson, Ohio.
The Oul Building and Loan Association eventually was incorporated in December 1915 as the Oul Savings and Loan Company (the "Oul S&L") and relocated from Brecksville, Ohio to 5638 Broadway in Cleveland, Ohio. Frank C. Manak served as President of the Oul S&L and its predecessor, which provided financial resources to the community of Cleveland's Slavic Village. "Oul" means "owl" in the Czech language, a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition. In October of 1930, the Oul S&L was merged into the Central United National Bank, the operations of which later became part of the Society for Savings Bank, which is now part of Key Bank in Cleveland.
